Questions and answers
Many times, we receive questions about HVAC systems. Hopefully, we can answer some here.
Questions
Question: When and how often should I replace or change my air filter?
Answer: The air filter is the most important item in any HVAC system. The air filter should be changed according to the manufacturer's specifications. Still, if you use a plane disposable air filter, I would suggest replacement every month, but do not go over every 2 months. Many new high MERV type air filters are on the market, which are very good at reducing duct. By doing a great job at lowering dust, they create a big air flow reduction and may cause issues with the system. You definitely want to stay on top of these types of filters.
Question: Should I have my system checked every year?
Answer: Most manufacturers require a yearly maintenance checkup to maintain your equipment's warranty. If you do not have routine maintenance,, the manufacturer may decline any warranty repairs.
Question: Is there anything I can do myself to keep the cost down?
Answer: You can do many things to help with both energy costs and repair costs.
* For the outdoor "condensing unit," you can take a hose and spray it down once or twice a cooling season. This will help keep the outdoor coil clean and put less strain on the compressor.
* Some equipment may have a condensate pump to remove condensation from the house. Adding a cup of white vinegar to the tank a few times a year will help the pump last longer. The vinegar will also help remove the algae buildup that causes the pump's float to stick.
*Should I close vents in my house?
Answer: You can, but be mindful of what you are closing. Systems are designed around air flow. If you close down air vents, your system can experience multiple issues, and the issues can be severe.

Question: How do I know I am being quoted the correct system?
Answer: The HVAC contractor should perform a load calculation. The load calculation will tell you what BTU heating and air conditioning system is right for your home. Don't be surprised if the load calculation is lower than your old system's BTU rating. Many older systems are oversized.

Question: How many BTUs are in a ton of air conditioning?
Answer: When looking at BTUs for air conditioning, 12,000 BTU per ton of air conditioning is used. Example 3 tons is 36,000 BTU

Question: Which way does my air filter go in?
Answer: All air filters have an air flow arrow somewhere on them. The arrow always points into the equipment it is entering.

Question: Do we need a permit for a new system?
Answer: Yes, most municipalities require a permit. If a permit is not pulled and inspected, you may run into issues if you ever try to sell your home. It is also important to have a third party inspect the installation to ensure everything was installed as it should be.
